Our state basically has a state of the art NBA ready arena that we may not be able to use.
Former ABA and NBA All-Star Dan Issel, spokesman for the group NBA2LOU, said Wednesday night at an informal gathering of investors that a Louisville NBA franchise could play elsewhere.
“UofL has a great lease there (the KFC Yum! Center),” Issel said. “I don’t know if an NBA team would be able to play there under the current conditions. But we have a backup plan.”
The Yum! Center is basically in a contract that doesn’t benefit anyone but the University of Louisville. The Yum! Center gave the University of Louisville’s Basketball Program $44 million last year in revenue. Meanwhile Louisville Metro is giving the Yum! Center $11 million a year to stay afloat, not including what the state has given.
An NBA team would eliminate these issues for the Yum! Center, but is UofL willing to share for the benefit of the city and state?
